Living in residence is the perfect first home away from home as you start your University career. Sheptytsky Institute plays a multiple roll in helping you reach your goal. "Sheps" provides accommodation and services which are necessary for daily life. We hope that this enables you, as a student, to organize your lifestyle efficiently and make the best possible use of your time at University. We also provide an environment for study and learning. Living in residence offers students a unique opportunity to get to know people from various cultural backgrounds who have travelled from various locations in hopes of reaching their goals. Learning to live with and appreciate others is an important part in education and personal skills development.
Every resident is expected to respect those who reside at Sheptytsky Institute, the facility, the staff, the Ukrainian Catholic nature of the residence, and all guides and policies as established by the Metropolitan Sheptytsky Society of Saskatchewan Board of Directors. Failure to do so will lead to disciplinary measures and possible eviction.
Frequently Asked Questions.....
What is Sheptytsky Institute like?
"Sheps" is a three story dorm style co-ed residence. The lower level and middle floor are assigned to males; the top floor for females. The female floor has two large washroom areas each containing sinks, private cubicles for showers, tub and toilets. Each of the male floors has one such washroom area. Three rooms on the middle male floor have private washrooms. These three rooms are only available for double occupancy. There are 20 rooms assigned for females, 24 for males.
On the lower level you will also find: the residence office, kitchen, dining room, laundry room, tv rooms, meeting/study room, computer room and student hockey/storage room. This is also the location of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchial Youth/Pastoral Campus Ministry office. The middle floor has a pay phone and an Eastern Rite chapel. The top floor also houses the Ukrainian Catholic Religious Education Centre.
Who can live at Sheps?
Residents must be registered at the University of Saskatchewan on a full time basis. If you have lost your full-time student status you are obliged to discuss this with the Manager immediately. Consideration is also given to students studying at SIAST or another learning institution. When available, temporary accommodation may be available for others who are visiting Saskatoon for educational purposes.
Catholic students in the liberal arts are encouraged to register for University through St Thomas More College.
Do I have to be Ukrainian and Catholic to live at Sheps?
No. But, it is our goal to provide an environment for students to experience something unique in terms of Ukrainian culture and Eastern spirituality during their stay at the Institute. Sheps reflects Christian values and ideals with respect to all activities, social and personal relationships. All Sheptytsky Institute residents are expected to respect these values.
My spouse and I are both students. Can we have a family room?
No, Sheptytsky Institute is not designed as a suitable living situation for couples, or families with children.
I understand that Sheps is alcohol and smoke free. Does that just apply to the public area and, can I consume alcohol in my own room, or my friend's room?
No. Sheptytsky Institute is a 'dry' residence. Everyone must clearly understand and respect this rule which is strictly enforced. Possession/consumption of alcohol will lead to eviction. Decorating with empty liquor boxes or containers is not permitted as it gives the impression that the alcohol was consumed in this location.
Smoking is only permitted outside the residence and away from entrance areas.
To qualify for a family discount do I have to share a room with my sibling?
No. Family discounts are given when members of the same family (primary residence is the same for both) reside at Sheptytsky Institute during the same University term. Double occupancy must be selected to qualify, but, both family members do not have to be in double occupancy.
Are pets allowed?
No.
How are applications processed?
Applications are considered in the same order as they are received. All personal preferences will be taken into account as much as possible when making application. A letter of acceptance, including fee structure and Contract for Residency will follow in the mail. Early registration is available for returning residents.
Does a returning resident have to pay the $20 application fee?
Yes. Every individual application must be accompanied by the application fee. If you follow through with the application and take up residency at Sheptytsky Institute, the $20 will be refunded at the same time as the key and caution refunds at the end of your term of accommodation. Please note that the application refund applies to students in consecutive years of residency.
Does Sheptytsky Institute accept credit or debit cards as a method of payment?
No. Payment must be made by cheque, money order or cash.
What are the rooms like?
Each room measures approximately 12 ft wide by 16 ft long. Some are larger, some are smaller. The three male rooms with private washrooms have a full bathroom that has a closing door. Double accommodation is assigned to the largest of rooms. Each room has telephone, cable tv and internet connection. Activation and payment of these services is up to each resident. For health and safety reasons, you are responsible to keep your room clean - supplies are provided.
Can I get a single occupancy room?
Single rooms are assigned on the basis that depends, among other factors, on the applicant's seniority as a University student and as a returning Sheps resident. (You will have already lived at Sheptytsky Institute for a complete winter session.) It is not always possible to accommodate the request of a first year University student to be assigned a single room. Applicants with special circumstances may be assigned to a single room. Based on the number of female applications, on most occasions, we are able to meet the request for a single room even for first year female residents. Early applicants, have a better chance of getting a single room. Applicants who prefer single but, accept double accommodation, will be placed on a single room waiting list.
What if I don't get along with my roommate?
It is very important that from the first day, a mutual understanding of sharing space be laid out. This includes any shared services such as internet and telephone. A roommate contract is available as a guide on what should be discussed. However, human nature is such that sometimes it just doesn't work as planned. These issues should be discussed with your RA and the Manager as soon as possible. We will make all possible attempts to help you and wherever possible, arrange a more suitable roommate, and switch rooms.
Can I pick my room?
Returning residents are given the opportunity to request a specific room. These requests are given consideration based on the situation of all applications. Allocation of rooms is completed prior to official move-in date, but not before mid-August.
Can I move in early?
If your classes begin prior to the regular class start date, and the move in date as listed in the Conditions of Occupancy Guide, or if you are participating in U of S orientation, special arrangements can usually be made. The Manager must be contacted at least one month prior to desired early move-in date. Rooms are not available for winter residency until the date shown in the Conditions of Occupancy Guide, and your confirmation letter. Meal services are not available if you are moving in early. Refer to the Occupancy Guide for the exact date of commencement of food services. Please be aware that all conditions of occupancy apply to anyone who is given the privilege of moving in early.
Is parking available?
Parking on the University campus and surrounding area is very restricted and limited. This includes the property at Sheptytsky Institute. You are only allowed to park in our parking lot if you have been designated a specific spot. If the doors are locked 24 hours, how do I get into the building?
All doors are kept locked 24 hours. If you are a resident you will receive a key to the front door (works on College Drive and on Wiggins Avenue) and a key to your own room. Visitors will buzz the room number of the person they are visiting (active SaskTel hardwired telephone required). If is very important to only allow access to someone who clearly identifies themselves and you know them. You should also keep the door to your room locked. If you lose your keys, you will be charged for re-keying of your room.

You must have an active telephone line to your room in order for the door buzzer system to work. Once your visitor enters the code for your room, your telephone will sound two short rings. Pick up and your visitor should identify themselves. Press 6 on the telephone and the front door unlocks. If you are using your telephone at the time that your room is buzzed, you will hear two beeps on the line. Press 3 to put your caller on hold and activate the speaker system at the front door. To allow entry to your visitor press 6. This also reactivates your phone conversation.. Please note that only the doors on Wiggins Avenue are connected to the controlled entry system.
