On March 28 we shared in the traditional foods that are a part of Ukrainian Easter breakfast.         May to August, Sheptytsky Institute is converted to accommodate summer tenants. Thanks to friends who help Wayne get the extra beds in place!

Going for groceries? Maybe - but, really Sylvia is just hauling out the shopping cart someone left in the hallway! The usual amount of trash collected on a Monday morning from throughout the building - sitting ready at the back door to be hauled to the alley container.

Friends from Emmanuel.

Way too much snow on one day! Then it had to be cleared away....      In the kitchen.

March 10 • Ukrainian Easter Egg Writing - Pysanky

Although this table played with chips rather than colour, they were great company to the artists!

January 23 • Ukrainian Christmas Theophany and traditional supper.

Following a Chapel service, Fathers Myroslaw Tataryn, Jeffrey Stephaniuk and Zenoviy Bahriy, blessed the Institute public areas as well as individual dorm rooms, as desired. Many guests joined residents for a delicious supper. Special thanks to SI General Manager's husband, Bob Baran, for making the holubtsi (cabbage rolls).

January • Ukrainian Christmas traditional celebrations.

An ancient tradition is bringing a sheaf of bound or braided grains into the home on Christmas eve. This 'didukh' symbolizes family ancestors whose spirits are believed to dwell in the stalks. It also represents new life, as the wheat kernel must die in the ground before it sprouts and produces new life - as through the life giving Nativity.      On January 10, 11 & 12, friends of Sheptytsky Institute welcomed Sheps residents to their home with another ancient tradition - caroling - expressing the joyous season of the Nativity of Jesus.

Hear and watch them! (4mg .avi format)

December 6 • Christmas party, games, prizes and gingerbread house decorating.

December 6 • Door decorating - and judging. Themes included lights and greenery, themed drawings, gingerbread people, candycane lane, carollers... The judges (Krista, Angie & Sylvia) looked for originality, use of color, theme and degree of difficulty - all that olympic judging stuff! And the winners were: Kim - for the degree of difficulty with the multi-dimensional Christmas tree; Miryha - with originality in the fireplace and Santa depiction; Serena - for the true meaning of Christmas; and, honorable mention to Erin with her depiction of reindeer and a bush.

November 3 • U of S Student Health representatives presented "Booze & Band-Aids" - an introduction to the Student Health Centre, which included hands-on activities.
